Tuesdays With Murray (Chapter 11)

Emory is slowly being weaned off of formula and moved entirely over to breast milk. Unfortunately, we were forced to try formula during the first 48 hours of life due to some problems that arose after he was born. (A post for a later date.) Well, the formula seems to have an appealing smell to our beloved Myrtle Man. I’ll finish a bottle and Murray will sneak over, steal the thing from the dresser/table, whatever, and bring it to his den. Yesterday, I had my mother hold it up to see what would happen.

  2. Murray looks like an adult cat now. Time to trade him in.

  3. As long as he doesn’t carry his affections over to your new and preferred form of feeding Emory.

I bet all cats would drink out of a bottle if given the opportunity.

  4. If Murray clearly prefers the formula, which one does TobyJoe prefer?

    btw, Emory is freaking adorable.

  6. thank goodness for freebies. We were given so much of it at New York Hospital that I am hoping it will last up until I’m able to support him entirely with breast milk.

Didn’t know it was costly! How much is it?

  7. So we know that Murray apparently has expensive taste and so far seems to not have a problem with the new member of the family, but how are the other furry children holding up?

Glad to hear Emory is doing so well and hilarious about the cat! It is not “unfortunate” that you were “forced to try” formula – you gave Emory what he needed at the time. Cooper was almost a month premature and we had to give formula at birth as well. His blood sugar was very low, what was I gonna do – deny him nutrition? Please do not feel bad!!!! Believe me I know the pressure and know how they make new moms feel with the formula v. breastmilk, you did the right thing.

  9. Lori, thank you so much for that comment.

  10. Lori, you need to give Matt some formula – that guy has always been too skinny.

  11. Amen Lori.

I hope you aren’t feeling guilty about that, Michele! I know I felt insanely awful giving Caroline a chaser of formula after nursing when she was severely jaundiced and needed extra fluids in the early days. Now I look back and wonder why I felt so bad about doing what was in my child’s best interest at the time. Oh right, the boob nazi books. Don’t read them. It’s not an all or nothing thing, and you’re doing great!

Oh and if you need to continue on with supplementing for a while or ever decide to make the switch: generic is just as good as name brand (I’d argue better—tastes more like breastmilk, less acidic and stinky, less foamy and thus less spitty, etc.) and half the price. Target, Walmart (they have an organic version), Kroger, etc. are all made by Wyeth.

Email me if you need some not-ideal birth/baby blues/breastfeeding challenges support.

You officially have every variety of cuteness in that house, man!

Tobyjoe: LOL! Should I give him some Stage 2 foods, too? Might be a good idea.

Michele: Of course. I don’t know your birth story (yet) but mine was complicated as well. Severe preeclampsia, breech baby, c-section. It wasn’t pleasant!! I remember the time you are going through right now so well. The joy, the elation, the overwhelming “oh my god how am I gonna do this?” feeling, the doubt, and the fear. And that’s all in only 15 minutes time. ;-)

If you care – We had latching issues, and I was so fucked up from my surgery and the pre-e, that I exclusively pumped for 8 weeks. I look back on it now, and I really have no freakin’ idea how I accomplished that! It was HARD and EXHAUSTING! I went through guilt as well when I weaned, but I had to go back to work full-time eventually so for me I always knew it would be temporary. Cooper now is a 100% formula fed baby – we are huge, huge fans of Nestle GoodStart – and he is thriving.

However YOU choose to feed your baby – breastmilk, formula, or a combo of the two – is the right decision. You are not deciding for all womanhood and mothers of the world. You are deciding for YOU and YOUR SON and your decision will always be right… for YOU!

[steps on soap box for a moment] And, as a side note: recently NYC government officials have banned formula freebies when you leave the hospital in 11 NYC hospitals, as a measure to promote breastfeeding. Sure, we don’t want to be advertised to and swayed in our brand choices but this really angers me. Until these same officials lobby to support ALL MOTHERS by getting us better maternity policies (like one full year, the length of time the AAP recommends that women breastfeed), making the workplace and public places more breastfeeding-friendly and giving out freebies of all the expensive breastfeeding shit you need – pump, bags, parts, nip cream, etc – they can shove it. Now give me my free formula bag!! [off the soap box]

  15. Murray so makes me want a kitten. We’ve been talking about getting Daisy a kitten after we get back from the beach to keep her company when we are at work. Maybe we will just come steal Murray:) Of course, Simone seems to think it will be a orange tabby cat so maybe we need Tucker. What are the chances of finding an orange tabby at the pound when we are ready.

BTW, if you go to the Enfamil and Similac sites and register with them, they will send you checks that can be used to buy formula. It is really random when they send them and they will range from $1-10. Same with the diaper people. Register with them and they send coupons for $ off diapers.
