I just went to Mystic Connecticut last month! It was fun and very charming. If you go there I highly recommend stopping by Clyde’s Cider Mill and this one really great restaurant, with absolutely delicious Rhode Island Clam Chowder (I think they had some vegan stuff too Toby), I can’t remember the name right now, but I can find out if you decide to go there. I have a friend who lives there as well, if you need good recommendations on places to stay.
Well, I have a room booked at the place we stayed at the last time. It was a nice enough place and it was downtown. However, I have no idea what else there is to do there. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :] And I love clam chowder, my lordy.
Well, there isn’t a whole lot to do there unless you’re into the touristy stuff. It’s a really charming place to drive around and there’s some good restaurants and the cider mill, but asisde from that I think the main attraction is the Mystic Seaport, which I found quite enjoyable with my history buff parents in tow, but it might not be all that exciting under other circumstances. There’s always the nearby casino if you feel like blowing a lot of cash and seeing the most horrendous display of “Native American” decorations this side of the Mississippi, but if there’s more stuff to do at the other spot, I’d go there.
You would be very close to New London, Conneticut, the site of the current Supreme Court Emminent Domain case, but I’m probably on my own in thinking that’s an exciting way to spend an afternoon.
You could go to Phonecia and rent Mystic Pizza or go to Mystic and rent You Can Count on Me (filmed in Phonecia)that way you get the feel of both places. Mihow…me and the missus got married about 15 miles from Phonecia in a little town called Onteora Park. Not alot to do up there as it is in between seasons but Woodstock, Phonecia and New Paltz are all pretty cool…Rhinebeck is pretty cool as well. Check out the Mohonk Mt House (http://www.mohonk.com/index_flash.cfm) it is on the way up there.
Or if you want the feel of the South Bronx in a more suburban setting I would suggest downtown Poughkeepsie (my college hometown…and a place that should be renamed the biggest slum on earth).
I have been to Pheonicia, not much to do, you’re right (went there because of that movie, actually). i think I just want to eat food and see something pretty. And TJ and I took a day trip to Mystic when we first met. It snowed. It was pretty. Poughkeepsie sounds like a good idea, too. crap, there is too much to think about. Maybe we’ll just cruise around Coney Island. heh
Mystic had a wonderful aquarium when I was there years ago (if it is open this time of the year). But I’m probably the only person that can spend most of the day in an aquarium.
Actually, I can spend hours there, too. Then, I just want to eat seafood.
If you are looking up in that area…I would suggest Rhinebeck, NY (up Taconic PKWY) and stay at the Beekman Arms (oldest Inn in America and amazing) and eat at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park (you need to call today for reservations if you want this…they book months in advance but they can always squeeze if you ask nicely). Every restaurant there is amazing.
And PoTown is just south so you can stop by :-)
i vote for mystic—i may even be there this weekend (visiting the family). i can give you LOTS of suggestions of things to do. The aquarium is open year round and is really great. lots more to do.. email me.

One of my favorite New England exploration trips was going to Mystic. I loved Mystic Seaport. Of course, I am really into any kind of colonial re-enactment or historical village kind of stuff. In the case of Mystic Seaport, the shipbuilding and various ways of catching seafood were really fascinating to me. It was also happened to be a beautiful fall day, which helped.

I vote for Mystic! Love the aquarium, and the seaport. “Downtown” is very cool (fabulous toy store just past the bridge) and there are lots of arty and touristy type stores at the seaport as well. But bring LOTS of money…. its all very expensive.
Does anyone else find it a little funny Mihow would want to EAT seafood after WATCHING it swim around in the aquarium? :0) hee hee!
Even funnier, Jodi, is that I am a vegetarian (or a fishetarian, rather). I blame it all on my father who took me out fishing at the mere age of like five and taught me that fresh fish is the most amazing treat on earth. I just hate killing them. :/
I think we’re gong to stick with Mystic. It’s cheap this time of year and we got a bitchin deal on a rental car. Next time, we’ll go for a hike up in the Catskills. I also really wanna check out Concord, Mass. But that’s a longer drive. Hmmmmmm
