Wanted: Skin Information

Lately I have had some skin issues. I never have had them in the past, I was a “lucky” gal blessed with freckles, and since I was forced to have spots all over my face, I was spared pimples and the like. Lately, my skin has been acting up. It’s not horrible, but it’s annoying enough. It’s very dry and itchy and I sometimes bumps form on my shoulders and back and my chin (not zits, just bumps and then they go away. Like a rash). It sounds grosser than it really is, I assure you, as you can barely see it, but I want to know what people do for stuff like this as I haven’t really had to worry about it before. I’m at a loss. Is it from allergies? Is it just dry skin? Is it nerves? Am I dying? :]

  1. You’re totally dying. ;)

It’s winter. Happens to everyone. No worries. Use a moisterizer and you’ll be fine.

  2. Sounds like winter. Try a very mild moisturizer, though, for someone with sensitive skin.

  3. things i’ve learned from ex girlfriends:
check anything you put on your face for alcohol content – if its got it, drop it. that will only dry out your skin more

throw some moisturizer on your face. make sure it has spf15+ on it. if you’re going cheap, buy basis at the drugstore. if you’re not cheap, go to the cosmetics counter at the mall, sephora or kiehls

wash your face morning and night, then use the moisturizer

and some other things that would sound too gay coming from me, but i swear girls i slept with taught me this

  5. you can admit to being a prettyboy here, jon, no one minds. i have my own weakness for Aveda, though I never indulge…

  6. Megan, that was super funny.

Jon, thank you SO much for the help. I have been washing my face more lately. I bought some super duper sensitive lotion from Wholefoods. It seems fine, thus far.

Even Dr. Bronner’s upsets my skin. And that stuff is supposed to be the best for humans. I don’t know. It’s tough. My legs are always itchy as well. I have so much lotion on it’s crazy. I hope it helps.

  7. Don’t forget to exfoliate your shoulders and back, Miss Mihow! Just a little loofah here and there will help, too. Don’t do it on your face, though. You’ll tear the crap out of your supple skin.

Mr. TobyJoe… I love the Aveda stuff more than just about anything. But if you do choose to indulge, you’ve got to be careful. I’m not sure if you’re a vegan for your own health or because of the little animals… But it seems to me that Aveda is not as stringent about their “no animal testing” policies as they used to be. The back of the bottle now reads (something like) “None of our FINISHED products have been tested on animals”. Finished products? This suggests that maybe the stuff that goes into the products has, indeed, been tested on bunnies, cats, monkeys, and the like.

That’s my public service announcement for the day. Sorry for taking up so damn much space.

  8. Don’t you dare apologize! That is very great information, girlie27. :]

the bottle of lotion I purchased recently reads something like:

“we have not tested any of this product or its ingredients on animals. And we have not asked anyone to do so either.”

It made me smile. So I bought it.

  9. btw, washing your face too much can also cause breakouts and dryness.

basically, dear, you just can’t win.

  11. i had to talk to my Dr. cause the winter + the meds i’m on are sucking all of the moisture from my skin. He said to get Cetaphil soap and moisturizer. And that it is the best and most gentle you can get. Works a treat.

Thanks! I will buy some pronto. I can’t stand much more of this crap.

There is a woman I work with, she has some huge boil infection thing in between her eyes… she keeps telling us crazy details about how she can move it around and stuff (the fluid). She got some cream for it and it smells EXACTLY like road tar.

    Thought I’d share.

  13. Oh my good lord.

Cetaphil is great stuff. And it’s cheap, too.

  14. Jon and Chandler are absolutely correct.

My skin has been funky this winter, so I’ve reduced my products usage to Cetaphil and mild moisturizer w/ sunscreen. (Also, are you still on the pill? It sometimes does strange things to skin, I’ve discovered. We’ll talk about it later.)

  15. yeah, I’ve blamed that since I started. I am sure that’s it. So annoying. I hate it.

But I’d rather pop out a pimple here and there over… say… a child.

  16. but a pimply child is an altogether different issue…

  17. I WILL NOT HAVE A PIMPLY CHILD!

    cetaphil is good

  20. I can’t believe i just referred to acne medicine as “the bomb.” I didn’t know it could be that cool. Yay! Acne!

  22. I asked for skin help on my site a while ago, and at the suggestion of some nice people, I picked up some Cetaphil and I’ve never looked back. And today I discovered from Not Martha that adding a bit of baking soda to your Cetaphil once or twice a week makes the best facial scrub, ever. EVER! I tried it today, and I can’t stop touching my face. So, so nice. Just don’t over-rub, you don’t want to scratch yourself. But it’s very nice, and feels so clean! In fact, I think I’m going to add baking soda to my shower soap for smoothing out knees and elbows and feet, and see how that works out. Viva la cheap products!!! I refuse to buy expensive, designer cosmetic stuff for washing.

  23. Poor Michele,
I don’t know what pill your on, but I think they all wack you out a bit even Ortho-Tri-Cyclen which is supposed to clear up acne (not on me i guess)

The cold wind, and the dry heat indoors are so bad right now. I broke down and went to Sephora like Jon mentioned in desparaation. My skin is really sensitive like yours.I’m allergic to aloe for pete’s sake. :P But now I’m psyched to try Cetaphil all the stuff mentioned here.

But i bought moisturizer called “hope in a jar” tagline: “You can’t change the weather but you can change your moisturizer” and it’s awesome so far. And with my face less scaly and raw, I’m not breaking out.

I also really like using St. Ives scrub all over my body because it feels good, and they’ve always had the no animal tasting (haHA) testing with the bunny logo on the back. It’s great to supplement exfoliation and get rid of that tight bumpy itchy winter skin.

Perhaps us Irish girls have some kind of biological withdrawal from not living in damp soft air that stays above 40 degrees.
