Whacking day

Wednesday aka Whacking day. Today we will watch the possible demise of my brother and his relationship with this thing called “a job.” What will come from Whacking day? Who will be “let go” and added to the ranks of the unemployed and (at times) the ones envied by those of us who are still just barely hanging on? It is now 7:48 a.m. I am feeling better. My wee little brother (who ain’t so small, really) had word of Whackingday weeks ago and has worried that he will be one of those Whacked. So this morning’s post (assuming that said Whackage happens in the a.m. leaving plenty of time for booze) is dedicated to the Whacked. And if you can’t laugh about it, there ain’t nothing. Let the games begin. Here’s to you, Ryan.

  1. Hello all. Wouldn’t you know it? The day I want to post live on blogger and it’s giving me issues. So right now I’m unable to post, hopefully it’ll be up soon.

  2. Still no blogger. Just read a press release that the Hong Kong research dept was axed (all five of them).

  3. Still no Blogger.

    Good luck with the Whacking.

  4. No new news or blogger. One person heard that it was only supposed to be management today and we’re safe. I don’t put much faith into that. The markets are about to open, could be an interesting day.

People are definitely concerned though. Everyone is saying pre-goodbyes, some are partially packing up, and a lot are making jokes. Interesting how humans handle things.

  5. The group that shares our desk (and is under the manager) just got called into a ‘huddle’ meeting. News? Don’t know.

  6. The other supervisor under my manager is gone. Not too surprising.

  7. Won’t they usually do it at the end of the day? That way they can squeeze a few more hours out of those to be whacked.
Well, for most, I know for me, the last 2 weeks while the company didn’t know if it was getting second round funding, we all just sat around, polished up our resumes and played starcraft, for hours, and hours, and hours, oh and we had Indian food for lunch, and talked on the phone. I got me 2 weeks severance, but the ceo took my computer so I couldn’t buy it from the co. The only Macintosh in the building, the one everyone made fun of and teased, and the ceo took it for himself.. Go figure.

  8. Whacking day, for me at least, has come to a very early close. No, I’m not fired. But our supervisor just gave us word we’re okay. The Whacks are going after the higher ups (about damn time).

I can’t believe no one else here is gone. We could easily do with 2 or 3 less people. I guess I should be happy.

    Kind of disappointing though…

  9. I’ll stop blogging on my sister’s comments site. When blogger is up later, I’ll post more on what’s going on if you’re interested in following it. I’ll leave you with this:

Starcraft is the shit and I bet I could rush your ass (I could take out three comps with protoss.) If I had a partner who was good at the mid to late stages – fear us man, fear us.

  10. well hot damn! excellent. So now a bunch of men and women with families and car payments and insurance and mortgages go home jobless.

    These times are damn rough.

Good to hear, Ryan you won’t need to take the job here.

  11. Hey, don’t feel too sorry. They’ll get decent packages; they’ll get unemployment; they have decent resumes.

I would have been out on the street with little unemployment, two weeks pay, and a resume with three jobs in one year (despite very, very good reasons).

Now to worry about this entire department being sold.

Oh – and to answer the question about timing of layoffs: they’re supposed to be done Friday afternoon. This company, the just do them whenever (today is the end of the pay period, that’s one reason).

Okay. Now I’m done blogging here – thought I’ll still respond. Meanwhile, blogger is back up. Enjoy

  12. i love when companies do it at the end of the pay period (usually) because they don’t know how to or don’t want to handle a partial payroll…

something about that makes them seem very weak to me.

how are there so many “higher-ups” at a strip club, though?

and how do you guys get unemployment, since you mostly work for tips?

  13. Go back to your programming tobyjoby. You’ll never understand, appreciate, or profit off of the world of financial shinanengans. Andersen recruited its employees from our specific strip club (which, by the way, is named Higher-Ups).

  15. getting laid off is only really sad when you care about the place where you work and you have a good time there and don’t worry about car payments or kids or shit like that.. it’s so mch harder to find a place that you care about working for, than to find a place that pays you money.

  17. The whole ‘culture of fear’ that offices can induce with things like “Whacking day” really pisses me off. How many times have we all seen shoddy managerial decisions being passed down to the “Whacked”?
    makes me angry.

  18. The culture of fear continues here. Our area is safe until July. Woohoo. The programmer’s Whacking Day is the end of this month. Nope, not stressful at all having to constantly worry about your employment.
