Sick Day

I’ve been battling something in my head. The right side of my face, neck, and cranium hurts. I’m not sure what’s going on. And nearly every time I work out, it throbs with pain. On Saturday, Tobyjoe had to take care of me at the gym. The pain was bad enough to make me nauseous.

Anyway, today I’m taking her easy and staying home to see if I can flush this out. I also have to get my life in better order – pay the bills, find out where I need to get my 30-year-old car inspected, pick up around the house, place and order through Fresh Direct – you know, all those things one shouldn’t do while taking her easy. But, if anyone out there knows of how to get a car inspected in Brooklyn, do share. (Are these places open on weekends?)

Lastly, I’m very sad to report that the cop I wrote about died after an 11 day ordeal. What a terrible story.

  4. You can get your car inspected anywhere. Stacey says to go to a place called “Two Guys” on the corner of McGuinness and Greenpoint aves. Keith says the price is state-regulated, so you can’t get ripped off.

I saw this morning about the cop dying…it is very sad indeed.

Are you going to share what this new project is all about, or is it only for the lucky top 5 who emailed you in time? I feel left out!

  6. Oh! Yes, the project is for anyone who wants to be a part of it. The site goes live tonight (at least a version of it.) It is for everyone. The only reason we can only take five folks on at one time is do to monetary reasons.

Promise to share. I wouldn’t leave anyone out ever. Especially the sweetest Sarah.

  7. Yes, but if they fail you for questionable reasons… they can get you to spend the money that way. If you have a recommended place, sometimes its better than taking a blind shot.

  8. Knowing my old car, they’re gonna try and screw me. Rest assured, one could easily sink about 10 thousand bucks into that car and it’d still need work.

I hope they take mercy on me.

  9. In VA, they slap a huge, red “FAIL” sticker on the windsheild, but I successfully got a re-inspection in MD once. If you can do it in NY, keep that in mind if they try to tell you something like your headlight is too dim and it’ll cost you $120 to fix it, at their shop of course.

  10. Do they check things like dash lights? I haven’t ever had a car inspected. haha

  11. (sorry if this eventually shows up twice)

I think exhaust, brakes, tires, mirrors, and windshield would be the big things. Tires, mirrors, and windshield are visual inspects and brakes and exhaust are important.

If your dash light is out, its probably just a fuse or a bulb, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

  12. when is your inspection due? if you have time on the meter(so to speak) don’t let them do anything and tell them you’ll get a second opinion. have them write out exactly what’s wrong and tell them you’ll get it fixed on your own. here in pennsylvania, if you take it to the shop and have them inspect it and they say something is wrong and it’ll cost X amount. what you can do is pay for the inspection and drive away without the new stickers. they should NOT remove the old stickers before you get the passing grade(very important for a girl to know otherwise you’re legally not allowed to drive that vehicle on the street and you’ll have to pay them to fix your muffler bearing or whatever!!!!!) so say you current inspection isn’t up until the end of the month tell them you’ll be back when the work is done(if you don’t trust them at that garage). a failed test is good for 10 or so days (in PA) and you can then drive around and using the previous shop’s work-order and get the best price for the work. make sure the place you go gives you a completed work-order with all that was done, go back and they shouldn’t charge you again for another inspection. when they hear toby wrenches for a living, they’ll understand when you ask all kind of detailed questions about what needs to be done or that you’ll call him to see what you should do. that may not help, but the best thing to do is ask a bunch of questions, tires are bald, ask to see and see what the regulation is….bulbs are too weak, ask for the bulb number and go to a parts store and buy some (2-3 bucks)…..break rotora are bad, ask how thick they are and what the cut off for legal is….break pads are thin, how thin and how much life is left where is the legal cut off…. muffler has holes, show me….. asking questions because you’re interested in know also shows that you realise they are a licensed inspection agency for the state and they have to cover their ass too. old cars are tough but it could be a walk in the park. you never know.

  13. Will is really screw me if my inspection already expired? :[

  14. well, regardless you don’t have to have anything repaired by them if you feel their estimate for the work is too steep. There is usually a 10 day period within which you have to have the problems fixed or else you turn into a pumpkin or something. So you can shop around for estimates.

However, the expired sticker would rule out the re-inspection possibility I think. I don’t think they can let you leave without either passing or having the fail sticker applied to the windshield.

  15. i believe aimee is right……they shouldn’t let you drive away. they sorta gotcha, but it may not be that bad. around here it’s a 98 dollar fine for driving an uninspected car, i know from experience, does that stop me from not inspecting my cars? no unfortunately

  22. I even got a ticket last fall for driving with an expired inspection sticker. I was pulled over for speeding, but because I was polite and respectful, the guy gave me a break and only cited me for the lapsed inspection. So I figure I have no incentive to get the thing fixed. Of course, a couple of months is one thing, letting it lapse two years might not win me any favors!

y’all, I’m not sure why, but I find this whole inspection lapse thing entirely funny.

  24. for me it’s almost embarassing to go to the garage at this point. if i get pulled over for the sticker, then i can say wow, i totally forgot to do it last year and for some strange reason that makes sense to me. if i don’t get pulled over, well no harm done.

missy, my mini is an antique. the one honda(blue beater) is worth around 500 bucks on a trade but it runs like a top and still gets 40+ MPG, can’t beat it since insurance for it cost 240 bucks a year…. the other honda, well, it just sits there and doesn’t get driven much but it’s brand spankin new. i actually have another antique car that is 45 years old but it’s only partially mine so i didn’t put it in my list and it is inspected, that’s what dads are for getting things done! : )
