Stuff About Music

Tomorrow, Toby Joe, Gerry and I are going to see My Morning Jacket at Webster Hall. I’m going to try and talk them into carving pumpkins as well. Though, that might have to wait until this weekend. The new My Morning Jacket CD called Z is really amazing. Everyone should run out and buy it today. On Thursday, we are going to see Death Cab for Cutie at the Hammerstein Ballroom. That CD is also pretty amazing, although, there is one song I could do without. The one called “Someday You Will Be Loved” makes me feel very uncomfortable. “Uncomfortable” as in an someone unwelcome touched a no-no spot. I forward it every time it comes on.

Later this month and on Halloween, The Mountain Goats are playing. I can’t seem to get enough of this guy even thought he made me cry this morning on the L Train. And that wasn’t the first time, nor will it be the last. For those unfamiliar with his music, he tends to sing about his stepfather who was not only a drunk but extremely abusive. The CD is, at times, is downright impossible to listen to. But I love it, all the same.

I’m curious. What is it you’re listening to? What was the last song you heard?

  2. Definitely loving Rilo Kiley (rilokiley.com) right now. The stand out track from them is “Does He Love You”. You can actually listen to it and 2 other tracks from their lastest album More Adventurous on the site.

  4. I’m pretty out of it when it comes to new music – but I went to see Elizabethtown this weekend, and the soundtrack is on the top of my list to get. Cameron Crowe has great taste in music.

  5. Funny, Sheryl mentioned Morning Jacket in her post today too.

I love Death Cab for Cutie. Sometimes my old, atrophied brain doesn’t get the new music these days, but I just love that band.

  6. It’s amazing that you’re such a big fan of Death Cab and haven’t heard of Rilo Kiley. The lead singer actually sang on the Postal Service album.

  8. I’m always listening to something new….and I love the mountain goats and death cab albums you just mentioned.

Right now my “new’ rotation includes Bell Orchestre (bellorchestre.com/ – a side project of The Arcade Fire), who played here in Ottawa last night, the latest Metric album (www.ilovemetric.com), The Clogs (clogsmusic.com), As The Poets Affirm (asthepoetsaffirm.com) and the Long Winters (thelongwinters.com), to name a few.

  9. Zac, I know, right? Especially since I abused the hell out of the Postal Service CD.
Annegelynn, baby, download the new one. It’s wonderful. We have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes is really good. Transatlanticism is hot, too. Passenger Seat gives me chills.

I’ve been listening to one of the Nad Navillus cds a lot lately. I sent toby an email about it earlier. It’s this guy Dan Sullivan playing guitar thats kinda country and kinda math rock. Him and his brother were on a few of the songs ohia cds as the backing band.

  11. my big sister is the best source of music I’ve ever known, which is convenient… you should check out slatch.com, and if you’re into the Mountain Goats, thelastplanetojakarta.com (john darnielle’s page). her page is americancircumstance.blogspot.com, she’s got some links on there too. She makes great mix CDs too. Let me know if you’d like some playlists…

  12. After reading your post, I downloaded some Death Cab, having heard the band but never having had the music for myself. Didn’t know what to download, so took the above reccommendations…. then watched the episode of 6FeetUnder season 4 where Claire and her art school friends get really high, and are all singing along to the same song lyrics “I need you so much closer… I need you so much closer…” I thought to myself – I should figure out what song that was, it’s good and it’s such a good scene, and just now, playing through the music I downloaded yesterday, I realize that was a Death Cab song, and it’s so good. So thanks.
