So, the new (I think?) Sony Earbuds are not my favorite things in the world. As a matter of fact, I might go as far as to use the word “hate” near them in a sentence.
I have the iPod version and they are the worst thing that has ever happened to me. Ever. They always ping out, if that makes sense. Like you’re listening to your music, and you feel them slipping, and you feel them slipping, and then ping! And so the cycle goes.
I can’t use earbuds at all. My ears must be too small because they always fall out of my ears and hurt when I try to make them fit somehow. I prefer headphones since they don’t hurt me.
They made my ears itch so badly, I considered burning them with matches. Headphones are the way to go. Since I can’t get water in my ears they aren’t exactly spotless. Gross.
metro, I need something because these sound like shit, too. Thanks for the link. When did a headphone turn into an earplug? I have had enough of wearing earplugs over the years. Gimme some good ol’ fashioned headphone. Like the ones I have on here. Come to think of it, that’s sorta the way I feel about the Sony Earbuds, dammit.
I find that I go through headphones faster than I go through iPods and I go through iPods really fast. Somehow, I keep destroying them. (A post I am currently working on: how I destroyed another iPod.) I should probably adopt the same concept I use while buying sunglasses; stick to the cheaper end because they won’t last long. Unfortunately, they don’t make low-end iPods.
Jonathan – Joe Grado, a real guy from Brooklyn, NY, is a Uppercase GOD in the audio world. Grado Labs is still in business after 50 years because their stuff sounds good, not because they have the best marketing department (Bose), not because their stuff is available everywhere at cheap prices (Sony), but because they produce quality.
I have those sony earbuds and, while I think they’re okay, I find that they do get uncomfortable after a while. Actually, the headphones I’ve been most pleased with from both a sound- and a comfort-standpoint might even be the same $9 ones that jonathan recommended.
melhow, I fondled those last Saturday and considered it but they seem so pricey. Do they squeeze the ear at all? I tired the ones that wrap around the back of your ear and my scar (from the operation) is easily irritated. Man, i am picky. :]
I like them because you can adjust the part that wraps around the ear and you adjust where the height of the earbuds. I can’t stand having things in my ears or rubbing the back so these to me are great. Plus, they seem to block sound well. Rob wears them to mow the lawn!
the grados are great sounding. chandler actually turned me onto them. they’re amazing for everything but electronic (the sony studio headphones have that great heavy bass to them)—and have a great midrange response. some people hate the foam earpads, but i think they’re amazing – they’re the only ones that let me wear glasses and don’t hurt my ears.
these are actually the cheap sony earbuds that i use click me. they sound great and are super comfortable. i try not to use them aside from walking w/the ipod, as toby long ago alerted me to the evils of earbuds and the goodness of open backed headphones.
I’m not sure I dig the earbuds. I think I need foam or the big ones I linked to earlier. I know, they are huge, but man they were the only thing that didn’t pinch my head. Granted, people stared at me on the subway. I looked like a grad-A dweeb.
I just bought those (since my cat chewed through the other ones) and completely hate them. So I returned them to Apple. Blah!

Burning your ears with matches or the earbuds? If you have a lot of wax in there, you could serve as a sort of human candle. I am tired.

i really like my grado sr80 headphones
they’re a bit pricey – $90 – but they’re sooooper comfy on the ears (they don’t hurt mine, even when i wear glasses)
they’re kind of like the exact opposite of those silver sonys everyone had in 2002— bad for electronic, great for rock
