There is a show called Godless America on This American Life. If you haven’t heard it, check it out. It’s a really great show. (I’m particularly fond of Julia Sweeney’s story.)
Julia Sweeney is awesome and until recently she had a website with a blog. After her NPR appearances, she started receiving threats and a huge backlash. She ended up taking down her site because of the angry, carzy people. She made the decision primarily out of concern for her young adopted daughter’s safety. It is sad.
And totally and completely ironic, too. So the religious zealots reacted exactly in the way she spoke about not comprehending? My head just exploded again.
what i can’t figure out is….what’s the big deal…..why is one side forcing god out and the other is trying to keep god in? this is all pure politics and those who fight to remove religion are as rediculous as the ones trying to keep it. the fighters of this squabble are just pawns in a political game…..i mean, when it comes down to it, what’s the real problem? are people really that offended by god? to me, it’s a stupid argument and a waste of time. what i find funny is that the more the the people try to get rid of religion, the harder the religious fight back. i don’t know, it just makes me think. : )

(The problem with the intersection of religion and politics is that the dominant religion in this country seems to be the fundamentalist Christian kind. Having grown up with fundie parents, I can tell you from personal experience that you don’t want fundamentalist Christianity influencing the laws that get passed, at any level of government.)
michele, i can’t seem to find the one you stated above. she’s funny, i agree with 98% of what she’s saying. even though i came from a background of zero religion and 100%science. but there’s still something missing.(IMHO)
