Diet Update (Sorry, in advance)

It’s been 12 days since Toby Joe and I started South Beach Diet. I have lost 6.5 pounds. On top of dieting, I have been working out nearly every day. I feel freakin’ fantabulous (mentally). I had no idea that would happen—that chemically things might change. I have been in a great mood for days now and I can fit into my summer pants again! Although we’re supposed to move to phase two come Sunday (which, for those of you who don’t know anything about the diet, basically means after a two week hiatus, we’re to reintroduce healthy carbs back into our system. That means things like oatmeal, whole grain bread, berries, etc.) I think I will probably stay on phase one for another week. My goal was 20, but I’d be pleased with 15.

I just thought I’d share. I really do feel better. It’s nice seeing changes. :]

  1. It’s made me pleasantly retarded, I must say. Being 98% vegan (I’ve had a touch of the dairy over the past 6 months, in sauces and such – oh, and I’ve tried a bite of three different fishes) makes this diet not so much difficult as… numbing? It’s not the choice of foods or anything, but I have always been a “beige vegan” – one who eats primarily starches. I think my brain is too reliant on sugar. I can solve problems fine, and my programming might even be more thought-out and calm (stylistically) these days, but my personality has gone from the loveable loud and crass dude to dead silent, respectful and even. It’s like I’m on an SSRI or something.

This morning, though, when the counter dude at Dean and Deluca offered me a free bagel I tore his arm off and used it like a baseball bat to knock all the scones and muffins on the counter into the street. You just don’t mess with my delicate and quivering will power. Not when I haven’t had my coffee.

  2. Oh, only ~5 pounds for me so far. But I’ve been lifting a lot of weight and my numbers are going up, so I’m assuming that beneath this sea of lipids that comprises my outer layer is some new muscle.

  6. We haven’t gotten rid of sugar entirely. Not at all. We just cut down drastically. (I find that running without sugar is nearly impossible. I looked like and felt like gumby. It was dangerous. :] )

  7. Congratulations you two! That’s really great news. I’m also happier since I started exercising, and you know what? I think I’m a better person for it, too.^

I haven’t started to diet yet, but my regular exercise is starting to pay off. When I came to the office early yesterday I went to the onsite gym and pulled 25 minutes on the rower, keeping my heart at 80% target heart rate, just to get my blood pumping for the day. Then last night I went to rugby practice and realized that I was running circles around guys over 15 years younger and (in one case) over 50 lbs lighter. That was very satisfying. I’m looking forward to running over some Canadians this weekend.
