Schmitty sick

This morning I went to Au Bon Pain and got some more of those bagel-bread things. So good. Today, for breakfast, on banana and one bagel-bread thing. And one cup of coffee.
My cat may be sick. I think I have to take him to the vet soon. A friend of mine is going to give me a number to a vet in Dupont. He says they’re excellent. I hope The Big Guy is ok. Last night he was acting funny. You can just tell with him as he’s normally a very social cat. I was pretty upest for a while when I got home and realized he wasn’t well. When he began eating again I cheered up. He seemed better this morning, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed. We’ll see. I hope this doesn’t traumatize him; He’s done a lot of travelling lately.
I am almost finished with the book Middlesex. This book is/was so good. I highly recommend it. I can’t say it enough to people.
I’m going to stop rambling for now.

  1. Not to freak you out, but my friend, Nikki, just moved to a new house and her cat freaked out for a few days. She was hiding in the corner, shaking. Eventually her cat came around and was ok…but that is very upsetting to see. :( I hope The Big Guy’s ok.

  4. Megan: I know what you mean. It’s not intentional yet super cool. Seems everything I read or go see somehow takes place in Michigan. Too cool.

Nico: Won’t say another word. I’m glad someone is reading it, when you’re done, we can have a book club session to discuss. WOOP!

Shmitty started eating again. I had to bring it to him though. This morning he ate more, out in the kitchen. So that’s good. He peed outside the box and I think (nearly positive) there was blood in it. :[ So I need to bring him in. Or watch closely. Maybe it was just dark. Who knows.

  5. It’s time to go to the vet. poor kitten. Oscar has urniary tract infections as well as the same blockage problems Shmitty has. If it is that there are cheap meds that fix it.

Boy cats have so many problems with their fixins. We always has girl cats so I had no idea.

  6. Poor little fuzz nuts. :(

Mihow: People are bitching here that Detroit looks so bad in 8 Mile…that they took the worst parts of Detroit. The thing is, a lot (not all) of Detroit IS that bad. Some people get it, but few don’t. It’s annoying.
I guess “working class cool” is ‘in’ these days… There is some beauty in all the concrete around here in some strange way.

  7. I meant to say “few do” get it. The bourgeoisie who wouldn’t get it. Everything’s “happy” in their sheltered Birmingham—where fuckin’ music is piped into the trees.

  8. Music from the trees??? Is Birmingham owned by Disney? ew.

  9. It’s totally creepy. Just a suburb of Detroit—in one of the richest county’s in the nation.

And then where I work, there’s a woman standing in front of me complaining that Detroit looks so bad. I just want to yell at her, “Lady, have you ever even been downtown other than to the Renaissance center (where GM’s headquarters are) ?” Here’s a 35-year old woman trying to explain to others who are not from Detroit (she’s from Long Island) about Detroit rap culture. It just makes me want to tell her to just stay safe in her little suburban world with her SUV and her Nordstrom’s credit card.

:: stepping off soapbox :: Sorry.

  10. Mihow, bring him to the vet as soon as you can. Urinary problems w/male cats is nothing to mess around with.

Most likely he’s just a bit off from the move, but don’t risk it.

  11. There was a block in Detroit where Mihow and I used to run up and down when we were little kids. Our great-grandparents Meme and Pepe used to live there so we would occasionally go visit. Lots of relatives lived in the same area, but were all forced out and the block was basically burned to the ground over the years.

Don’t know how strong michele’s memory of that place is (two years younger makes a big difference) but I remember it very fondly.

  13. French for mom and pop. They were french canadian.

Which means my family has a history of surrenduring but with a mean hockey slapshot.

My main memories of Pepe are him wearing a white t-shirt with a beer in hand and yelling at Meme “YOU SANTA CLAUSE WOMAN!” because she would spend money on other people.

  14. One of my earliest memories was Pepe coughing his guts out into a brown paper bag. He would drink beer and throw up and drink beer and cough some more. It was horrible. (at least in my memory). I also remember being told to stay away from him when he was that sick. Poor Pepe.

  15. That is cute! Sorry, that was an insensitive response to a family tragedy story.

I want to be a santa clause woman.

  16. did pepe chase girl cats around and talk with a french accent? i knew you smelled bad, but didn’t realize it was your hereditary skunk genes.

  17. totally not insensitive, nico. I was so young it was just a freakish memory. Not a tragedy when you’re that young. No worries.

  18. I don’t know if mom will read this today (and I’m taking off soon, love those flex fridays) but I believe there is the story of how Pepe suffered a heart-attack but took the bus to the hospital because it was cheaper. And then left the hospital that night in order to make it to work.

That and he dug out a “basement” and put a couch down there so he could drink without being yelled at. He would come up dirty from sitting in what was basically a hole in the ground insisting to Meme that he hadn’t been drinking.

All memories of Meme seem to focus around the kitchen.

By the way, I hope these descriptions don’t sound horrible, because they are actually good memories. Especially the “You santa clause woman you!” I remember my uncles always mimicking this line.

  19. Sheesh michele, with our backgrounds (Irish, French Canadian and Polish) were basically drunk, cheese eating surrender monkeys (thankyou Simpsons) who are the butt of all jokes.

But I believe there is also a little German, so we occasionally start major wars as well.

  20. I love the basement/foxhole story! I’m going to dig my own basement and wrap presents down there since I’ll be a santa clause woman too. The How family is so inspiring.

  21. That is hilarious that he would take the bus to the hospital ‘cause it’s cheaper. Man alive. Gramps had a sense of humor, despite what sounds like a bit of a problem with the bottle. ;) I wish he wrote a book.

  22. See, my memories are of wallpaper. Large, printed things on wallpaper. And some white guy with an afro. I think he was my cousin or something.

I remember the booze and I remember the strange hospital looking gowns meme used to wear around the house when she was cooking and cleaning. They were like giant baby cloths, super comfy and they sort of blended together with the wallpaper in my memories. And I remember a lot of yellow.
