Where are you?
posted by mihow on June 5th, 2003
Time for a question! It’s simple. I’m mihow. I currently sit at a gray desk in Washington, D.C., U.S.A. To the fine folks who leave comments here regularly and bring me daily fits of joy and laughter, I was thinking it’d be nice to know where it is you write from. So, where? Just a curiosity, really. I don’t want to scare anyone. And the lurkers? I guess you fine folks can just do what it is you’re good at, and say nothing.
Edited to add: Where do you write from? Help me improve my geography.
(I was trying for a map of the world but instead I’ll just appear entirely nationalistic and put up the U.S.A! [and Canada, who is apparently shrinking]).

NYC, from a door being used as a desk, cheap bastards. Megan, where about in the West loop?
June 5th, 2003 at 06:35 AM
at least you have the really cheap version of the Aeron, chandler, even if you are still trapped in someone’s silly dotcom fantasy world where RSI and CTS are romanticized as battle scars…
i’m in adam’s morgan, in a robe, cussing the world because the coffee shop is AT LEAST 300 yards from here and that just isn’t right.

Eurotrash present as off now! I’m writing from the Netherlands and I am at work, but about to go home, because my working day is over. That’s timezones for ya.
June 5th, 2003 at 06:42 AM
Chandler, on Monroe & Ashland. Did you live here?
June 5th, 2003 at 06:43 AM
Texas! WOOP! I want to visit Texas some day.
And there’s someone from Europe too! Wooohoooo!
Any asian folks out there?
June 5th, 2003 at 06:46 AM
Texas can be really pretty, but it’s also hot. Hot, Hot, Hot, Hot. The heat sucks. I can’t wait for vacation.
June 5th, 2003 at 06:48 AM
I bet it’s not raining there. I bet if it does it doesn’t do it for 27 days straight. GOD DAMNIT!

Doors for desks? Chandler you must work for a non-profit or something.
June 5th, 2003 at 07:11 AM
No, Mihow it isn’t raining here, but we are in a drought. We’ve had one rain in the last 45 days.
June 5th, 2003 at 07:14 AM
“Chandler you must work for a non-profit or something.”
I will be laughing all the way to the coffee shop over that one.
June 5th, 2003 at 07:23 AM
Another lurker here. Chicago!
June 5th, 2003 at 07:24 AM
yeah that was written for you.
i was crying when i wrote it.
June 5th, 2003 at 07:25 AM
k. you Canadian folks may have to correct me. Not sure I know where you are. So if I circle the wrong area, please flog me.
June 5th, 2003 at 07:27 AM
I’m still enjoying “what a small world” news! When was the last time you were back here? (Now I can’t stop singing that damn song, either.) Girl27, I’d invite you and everyone else to come here to have a drink, but, as Mihow can attest—you’d be REALLY bored!
June 5th, 2003 at 07:31 AM
girl27, I can’t find me no Waterloo.
June 5th, 2003 at 07:37 AM
AccuWeather in beautiful State College PENNSYLVANIA – there is no “tuckey” here!
Lake, I was never bored in Coakley’s.
June 5th, 2003 at 07:39 AM
oh yes! Politti’s Pizza YUM! Eat there. For me. Yes.
June 5th, 2003 at 07:55 AM
Mihow, try looking for Kitchener. We’re sometimes called Kitchener-Waterloo. But us Waterloo folks hate Kitchener. Nothing but dirty bums there.
Lana,I think Ottawa must only be boring if you live there. Looks like heaps of fun from over here. You’ve got Starling, Kathleen Edwards, and a cool Tulip Festival! (A good friend of mine just played the festival a few weeks ago..)
June 5th, 2003 at 07:56 AM
i¥m writing from peru, where its almost raining, and just too cold right now!
June 5th, 2003 at 07:58 AM
Girl27, I used to drive past you on my way to Toronto from Detroit. woop!
June 5th, 2003 at 08:02 AM
Very good point scbob!! You can’t beat being able to walk to a place with Guinness on tap! Or a movie theatre where you can get a ticket, popcorn and soda all for less than $10. Maybe its not so bad here after all…
June 5th, 2003 at 08:02 AM
Another lurker, from Indianapolis.
Can I make a couple of comments on lurking? Quite awhile back you said something about “damn lurkers” that made me feel a bit like a Peeping Tom (kinda true, I confess).
But I lurk only because I have little or nothing to contribute/relate to your life situation (dumb phrase).
I lead a very different life than you (much older) and find your life, and comments thereof, a whole bundle of interesting, poignant, funny, silly, profound, more.
Strange this blog thing.
Good luck with house…relationship…life.

mihow: ”...put up the U.S.A! [and Canada, who is apparently shrinking]”
Damn, I hate when that happens. Plus, it looks as if a blue sock got mixed in with the wash ‘cause they’re all tinged, and stuff.
June 5th, 2003 at 08:09 AM
My library, cowering under stacks of books that threaten to topple, almost as far west of crummy old Chicago as I can get without falling into Iowa.
This is what I see when I get close to town:
http://weather.admin.niu.edu/
June 5th, 2003 at 08:19 AM
Lake, I confused you with Lana. I couldn’t understand why she thought Ottawa was boring!!
So, nothing happens in Harrisburg? Ever?
June 5th, 2003 at 08:24 AM
Nothing too exciting as long as I’ve lived here! Thank goodness Philadelphia, New York and Baltimore are close! There really isn’t much here at all. Its pretty, and safe, but dull as could be. But Hershey is near by—the whole town smells like chocolate!
June 5th, 2003 at 08:25 AM
I went to Hershey once on a family trip out East. Loved the Hershey Kiss street lamps.
June 5th, 2003 at 08:29 AM
depends on how one understands profit. if by “profit” you mean deeply rewarding and always exciting, world-a-better-place type stuff, then yes, i work at a not-for-profit :]
June 5th, 2003 at 08:45 AM
They have a mock street lamp in “Chocolate World” where you can get your picture taken to look as though you are sitting on it. Megan I’ll be in Chicago in July for the All-Star game!
June 5th, 2003 at 08:49 AM
Lake, Again, something happens there every once in a while – How about Three Mile Island? Now that was exciting. That is the reason Mihow’s younger brother is so smart. He’s radiated from birth.
June 5th, 2003 at 09:10 AM
Lake, I wonder if that coincides with the 100th anniversary of Harley Davidson in Milwaukee which I’m going to. If it does, then that sucks.
June 5th, 2003 at 09:13 AM
I just returned from a work, pizza party. Gonna update the map now.
June 5th, 2003 at 09:14 AM
right now, chandler is thinking of pizza party jokes… too bad it isn’t wednesday.
June 5th, 2003 at 09:15 AM
welcome, Mike the Mick. :] feel free to comment any time you’d like.
June 5th, 2003 at 10:28 AM
You all lived here when TMI melted? I see it everyday on my drive to work and always wonder what that might have been like. After 9/11 ‘they’ gave us pills to take in case of radiation exposure. A few years ago half of the bridge to City Island washed away – that was sort of interesting to see! When is the Harley celebration? Ooh – York, only 20 miles away, has the only Harley manufacturing plant in the country.

I write from Richmond, Michigan, a small farm town. I feel like Mike the Mick does. ‘Cept I’m a 21 year old college student. I love reading the comments, but often have nothing to say. I find Freakgirl’s blog amusing as well.

But everyone has something to say…

June 5th, 2003 at 12:27 PM
while coloring in Ohio, I thought to myself… what’s that weirdly shaped state to its right and down?
I had to look it up. Ahhhhhh sweet, mishapen West Virginia.
June 5th, 2003 at 12:34 PM
Mihow, this was such a neat idea. I might steal it for my blog tomorrow, if you don’t mind. Of course I shall give you proper credit.
June 5th, 2003 at 12:36 PM

i usually write from 18 stories up over downtown St. Paul MN (my house), unless i write 12 stories up over downtown Minneapolis MN (work).

June 5th, 2003 at 07:09 PM
Aw, Illinois is where Chicago is, baby doll. ;)
June 6th, 2003 at 03:17 AM
you know, last night (because I don’t have enough to think about in the middle of the night) I woke up with this thought, “I FUCKED UP ILLINOIS!”
Damn. See? I just moved you to Michigan for a day. How was it?
June 6th, 2003 at 03:20 AM
And, not that it matters now because I’ve already gone and embarrassed myself, but I do actually know that Chicago is in Illinois.
June 6th, 2003 at 03:39 AM
you know, last night I was watching CSI and I thought, suddenly, “I FUCKED UP SOMETHING!”
I just moved you, Henry and Lyndsy to Michigan for a day. How was it?
And, not that it matters now because I’ve already gone and embarrassed myself, but I promise that I do actually know that Chicago is in Illinois.

Flat-iron district, Manhattan. I’m a pretty regular lurker.
June 6th, 2003 at 06:58 AM
I used to write from an office that looked like Central Perk a block from the ferry dock in downtown Seattle. Now, and for the last month, I’m in a very utilitarian 1950s office building at 18th and Mass. N.W. D.C. with a view to an apartment building courtyard. Nice weather today, hopign for sunbathers.
June 6th, 2003 at 07:01 AM
DaveJ, are you here to stay?
And Damn! I was hoping to color in the State of Washington. :]
June 6th, 2003 at 07:03 AM
Malta, Malta, hells, bells and smells Malta. And extra credit to you if you can locate the place without recourse to an atlas :)
June 6th, 2003 at 07:06 AM
yeah, ok. I dunno. Your url reads “dairyland” but I’m thinking you’re not in the U.S.A.
hmmmmmm
June 6th, 2003 at 07:10 AM
Here to stay. New job. New apartment in a couple weeks. As David Bowie would say, “Traaaaaans-ition.”
Malta is in the Mediterranean.
June 6th, 2003 at 07:10 AM
Brava! Imagine a small island about thirty or so miles south of Sicily, and, er,...there you have it.
June 6th, 2003 at 07:16 AM

I’m sitting at my desk which is located right next to my sliding glass door to the backyard, which is located in Toronto, Ontario. It’s sunny today. Our dollar is now worth 0.73 of your dollar. Life is good.
June 6th, 2003 at 11:57 AM
I’m sure there’s still a desk open back there if you change your mind, Toby.
June 6th, 2003 at 02:12 PM
Megami, I just hope that my dollar is much stronger than yours and that SARS is a thing of the past when I come to your city for the film festival in September!
June 6th, 2003 at 06:30 PM
Ooh! Missy, if you’re coming for that, we’ll have to meet you downtown for a coffee or a big glass of booze! Get in touch with me if you’re interested; I’d love to meet if you’re okay with that sort of thing. We will protect you from SARS.
June 6th, 2003 at 06:49 PM
Hi, I guess you could call me a lurker as well…ugh. That sounds so creepy…. Anyway, I am currently living in Centreville, VA (close to Dulles Airport), I moved out here almost two years ago. Before that i was living off of Belmont Rd. in Adams Morgan in DC. Talk about culture shock!!!!! However my biggest change will be taking place at the end of August when I will be moving out to San Francisco. So, I will leave it up to you to choose which state to color!
June 9th, 2003 at 09:28 AM
I’m being spied on at 3rd and G NW.
