When you wrote about Dan’s assault yesterday, I couldn’t help but think about this poor child. His parents went to such lengths to protect/remove/shield him from violence and the threats of the street. My heart goes out to them. The sad thing is, if it hadn’t been the iPod, it would have been a pair of shoes, a necklace, or something else that would have attracted the attention of the roving band of thugs. Of course, that offers little consolation. A similar (and fatal) thing happened a few years to a good friend of my brother in law.

Charlie, I agree. Something else would have set them off. Though, according to the article I linked to above, it’s these hand held items – like iPods and cell phones – that are attracting these people. That’s really very sad. You should see our subways here. They are strewn with MTA ads/signage warning people to conceal their cell phones and other appliances. (I don’t think they’re allowed to come out an say iPods but that’s implicit it seems). The fact that high school kids are being targeted is unbearable.

My iPod is actually a pipe bomb with remote detonation abilities.
