Tax Day

Today is Tax Day for the mihow and the toby joe. (Yes, we waited until the last minute. No, I don’t want to hear it.) We have a meeting this evening with some guy in Brooklyn. We’re a little concerned as we freelance. We’re not sure what to expect especially since we were married in 2004 and I Toby has basically been supporting the both of us for the past 5 months. I anticipate our leaving his office feeling one of two ways. We’ll either feel ecstatic or completely screwed.

Won’t someone please tell me that Bush’s whole family value thing will help us out as newly weds. I’m not sure how or why, but I have heard rumors.

    i feel you, in lieu of “getting started” with a tax rant (i don’t know how the tax laws are now but when i was married it really would have only been better if one of us hadn’t been working, so maybe you’ll be in a happy place)

    i thought i had my taxes all done, but because of a tiny pay check from a DC company done after i moved but earned before i had, i have to do a DC tax return as well as NY, and it feels very much like trying to determine which door knob to ask, so as to get through the labrynth. lol.

    sorry i’m not making sense. too much reading of tax documents. :)

    Actually, you might benefit-despite your charming friend Jon’s thoughts. Rob and I did. What people don’t realize is that the federal tax rate is the same no matter where you live so even though you are middle class in NY or DC in other parts of the country you would be the terrible wealthy ones.

    well, I hope we get some kind of help considering. we just figured out exactly how much we both made last year. It’s actually pretty average. Put it this way, there are numerous folks who make more than us combined. Numerous. I hope we don’t get screwed. :/

    The one thing I would be afraid of for you is if you didn’t pay estimated taxes on your freelance work. Depending on the amount of freelancing that could really hurt!

    And for the record, we didn’t have to sacrifice our first born or vote republican to get the tax break:)

    speaking of estimated taxes—

    if you file for an extension , which you will probably need to do, you need to pay $$ on the estimated taxes

    i’m sending the IRS a check for 4k – i think i probably deserver 1k back, but i dont have time to file by the deadline—so i can overpay and get cash back. if you underpay, they charge you interest. expensive interest, i think its 9%

    it’s tricky we really got f-ed in the a because christie was my dependent for almost the whole year and made so much freelance in the last 3 onths of the year that I couldn;t get the deduction. The newly weds thing doesn;t seem to help anything, just makes it more complex. But I hear that estimated quarteries is where it’s at.

    I was up late doing my taxes. I am an administratve f-ck up and I do my own taxes with turbotax online. What screws you is the self-employment tax: another 15% off your gross (which your employer normally pays). Basically, between state, local and federal, if you haven’t paid 1/3 to the gov’t, you’re screwed. Or, as I like to think of it, brutally ass-raped. Having 3 kids and paying interest on a home loan makes it a little easier, as does paying an outrageous $4500/year in local and property taxes. Needless to say, I always view Owen’s birthday with mixed feelings. I love the little guy to bits, but why the hell did he have to be born near tax day?

    the self-employment is 1/3 off your GROSS

    there’s a lot to deduct from your net to get your gross though. office expenses, rent, power, utlitiies, computers, subscriptions, etc

    We are home again and not too poor. That went considerably well. I thought we’d have to give them an arm or something. We did owe, but it was reasonable. Sort of. I’ll probably write more about it after I shower the lube off.
