Percolating (again)

Toby Joe and I have decided to start a new project. Well, I have decided to start a new project and I’m going to bring him along, kicking and screaming. Every week, we’ll venture out into a neighborhood of one of New York City’s five boroughs and capture whatever it is we see. Last Friday, I spent 4 hours at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral., Today, I’m going to spend several hours in Nolita. While we’re visiting, we’ll take several rolls of film which we will post come Monday. I plan on using black and white and color for this. Hopefully, I’ll end up with some visual stories to share with everyone.

I’ve wanted to do this for a long, long time. Ever since mihow.com was conceived I have wanted to do this. And we did for a while. We took pictures of everywhere we went on bike, foot, subway. And they all still exist here somewhere. But we’re going to start anew. Because back then, we didn’t really set any parameters. This time, I feel that we must.

New York City has always inspired me. It’s the only place I can think of where one could spend a lifetime investigating and never run out of new discoveries. To put it simply, I love that. I have three goals. First, I want to get to know the city a little more. Second, I want to learn something more about street photography and the people around me. Lastly, I’d like to pass on what I find to anyone interested in New York City.

If you have ideas or suggestions please send me an email (mihow at this domain dot com) or leave a comment.

  2. Here’s an idea for one outing – signs. They always have so much character, especially the older ones that have seen a lifetime of wear. It’s a great way to look at type too.

  3. Cloisters, Poe’s cottage, Woodlawn cemetery (a MUST—all the crypts for the famous New York families are up there), stadiums, Bronx Zoo, Coney Island, Boardwalk, ferries, CBGB’s (before it closes down), the Battery, bridges, …

  5. Very cool idea! I sorta do this a few times a week on my way to work and home. And on weekend swhen I go walking. Last weekend I picked up trash in a neighborhood near my house for hours, and snapped photos along the way.

But I have to say I am shy about photographing strangers. One time I snapped a photo on the bus of a guy and the guy snapped. Ever since then, I have been a little candid-people-shot-phobic.

But oh how I would love to!

  6. Arjen, great site. It needs a bit of a facelift, me thinks. :] That’s the designer in me coming out. The content is swell.
La Pix, that’s the only reason this site exists; as a way to make my commute less stressful way back in the day when I had a job AND we lived in nyc the first time. This time, I’m going to be try and be a bit more deliberate in the areas I choose, but totally off the cuff with shooting. We’ll see!

  9. Yes, edit away. Decide how you want us to see. Be willful and all that.

  10. Can we respond with images from our neighborhood?
A photo comment post?? Today we were in a grocery store parking lot and saw a little old couple (presumably Eastern European based upon support hose and other wardrobe items) sitting in their teal colored Ford Fiesta. Now for the good part- the man had a rooster on his lap. A pet rooster! Mitch snapped a covert photo… i’ll send you a copy.
