Mom It Down: Easy Whole Wheat Biscuits

I discovered this recipe five or so years ago and I’ve been loosely following it ever since. These biscuits probably aren’t going to win any awards, but they sure do hit the spot! Clocking in at a 10 minute preparation and clean up time, you simply can’t beat the taste-time ratio.

What You Will Need:

  • Some type of circular cookie-cutter. (I use a glass!)
  • Rolling pin
  • Baking sheet

Ingredients

  • 1 cup white flour
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil

Mom It Down!

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Put everything in a bowl.

Mix it with a spoon of your choice until it looks like this:

Start using your hands. It’s so much easier to work with, quicker too!

Roll out your dough on a lightly floured surface so it’s about 1/2 an inch thick and cut out your biscuits.

You’ll have extra dough. Ball it up, and start again until there’s nothing left (or there aren’t enough scraps for another biscuit.)

Lay them all out on an ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake for 13 to 15 minutes. You are done!

That’s it! You can eat them right off the pan. I like to slather on some butter. My husband prefers a little jelly. We’ve even used maple syrup—whatever you want!

Even toddlers like them and I have one of those kids who refuses to eat anything.

Overcoming Obstacles

There are no obstacles with the biscuits, but if you’re met with obstacles when it comes to your toddler, give him or her a piece of the dough to play with. I bet you’re finished with the biscuits before your toddler gets bored.

Alterations

This recipe doesn’t yield many biscuits, which usually works best for me as I’m usually making them last minute to go alongside something Toby Joe has cooked. (Or I make them for breakfast.) But I reckon you can double this recipe fairly easily. I haven’t tried personally, but I can’t see it being a problem.

I’ve added a pinch of nutmeg. I’ve done 1 cups whole wheat flour and 1/2 cup white. I’ve used maple syrup. I’ve added more milk in place of some of the oil. I’ve used soy milk in place of regular milk. They seem really versatile!

Enjoy! And feel free to comment with suggestions and/or amendments.

I hope you like them! All 7 are gobbled up at our house, the three of us don’t leave any leftovers.
