This morning while the L train was delayed due to “break error” (we were in the tunnel outside of Bedford), I had my headphones on and thought of your post. If we all were a little less self conscious- the train car could have a been a silent disco, each person dancing to their own music. I was tempted to dance and twirl, but not enough space so I moved my hips and tapped my feet. Then 20 min. later the train moved.

Bravo! Well stated and poignant. I feel VERY self conscience and readying your post makes me aware, yet again, that I shouldn’t care what others think.

If I want to give someone a hug – I will. I’m impulsive like that, usually. Until I feel uneasy/self conscience.

If I want to dance – wide hips and all – I should just do it. :-)

Love this post. Maybe he’ll work through it as he moves through the developmental stages… I would hate for him to lose his dancing feet! Nothing is more endearing than kids dancing, singing and being generally goofy.

I know exactly what you mean, because my son is just about a month or so younger. We LOVE watching him “do the Matthew”, which is basically him thrusting his hips side-to-side at the speed of light, no matter the tempo of the music…or even if there IS music! But once in a while, you can see that he wants to live it up and do the Matthew…and he holds himself back. It’s very sad, and I will miss all of us doing the Matthew together in the living room.
