We Got a Little Teapot

April 30th, 2009

We have a lot of kitchen appliances. Out of the appliances we own, the two that we’ve used the most over the years has been the KitchenAid mixer and the Cuisinart Electric Kettle. I use the KitchenAid at least three times a week. And Toby Joe makes tea almost every night. I often use our kettle for Em’s oatmeal as well.

Sadly, our kettle died a few weeks ago, after years worth of daily use it just croaked.

This is what we ended up with.

My question is simple: do you like our new kettle? How do you feel about its design? Because one of the adults living under this roof doesn’t like the looks of it and has therefore pushed it way, way back into a corner. The other adult person living here purchased it and is quite pleased with it.

How do you feel about our new kettle?

Don’t be shy. I sure ain’t been.

March Of Dimes: Walk For Maddie

April 29th, 2009

The moment I heard about Maddie Spohr’s tragic death, I knew I had to do something. So, whenever Isabel Kallman of AlphaMom wrote on Twitter stating that she’d be walking for the March of Dimes in honor of Maddie, I decided to join her.

Tuesdays With Murray (Chapter 92)

April 28th, 2009

I kept thinking about this post, wondering how I’d get everyone to believe me when I told them that he put himself in this position—that I had nothing to do with it. I wasn’t sure people would believe me when I told them that this clumsy creature climbed on top of a wooden chest and inside a comforter without knocking a single stuffed animal onto the floor. But then I realized that anyone who knows anything about cats knows that we humans have little control over the cute and weird things they do. In fact, human intervention of any kind usually results in a blank stare or motionless protest. No, they don’t need us. Cats act weird all their own.

Mom It Down: Red Velvet Cupcakes With Cream Cheese Icing

April 27th, 2009

I took this recipe from Cupcakes Year-Round: 50 Recipes for Every Season and Celebration. The book gets mixed reviews on Amazon, mainly because of the way its designed (spiral bound, easel) but it does the trick, especially if you want something a little more decadent but not super difficult. Today’s recipe features red velvet cupcakes with a cream cheese icing.

Cupcake! WOW!

April 24th, 2009

I’ve been baking cupcakes for Monday’s Mom It Down. I’m learning stuff, perfecting stuff by simplifying it as much as I can. In doing so, I have had quite a few cupcakes around lately. This is what happens when Emory realizes there are cupcakes in the house.

Tuesdays With Murray (Chapter 91)

April 21st, 2009

After Em was born, I was up every couple of hours feeding him. Every night, I made several, bleary-eyed treks through our railroad apartment in search of pumped milk. Along my journey, I’d encounter famished felines, they would zigzag between my feet, sometimes causing me to stumble. Couple a feline obstacle course with bone crushing sleep deprivation and you’re left with a recipe for disaster. But somehow we all made it through in one piece.

Mom It Down: Chocolate Chocolate and White Chip Cookies

April 20th, 2009

These cookies are pretty awesome if I must say so myself. I have been making them for quite some time. They are super easy—even more so if you cut a few corners. If you have the ingredients on hand and are in need of a chocolate fix, these are perfect. You’ll be taking your first bite within 20 minutes or less.

Twitter: I’ll Show You Mine If You Show Me Yours.

April 17th, 2009

I should begin by saying that I enjoy Twitter. I like seeing how people tell stories when they’re only given 140 characters to work with. But it’s a good thing that the service is free, because I do have some issues with it.

Datadoo!

April 15th, 2009

A few weeks ago, we had a parent-teacher conference at Em’s preschool. He was 19-months-old at the time and I assure you, the absurdity here does not escape me. But this is the sort of thing that happens when you combine over-achieving, uppity parents with bloated, private school tuitions. They come up with parent-teacher conferences where terms like “fine motor skills” and “sensory stimuli” are used in place of “he mashed Play-Doh” or “we found him digging through the trash.”

April 14th, 2009

We put my mother’s 16-year-old cat, Hazel, to sleep on Saturday. It was rough. We’re going to miss her.
