Parachute day was only 1-2 times a year for us – no way was I going to miss it. I wish they made a play parachute for one or two people…..

They definitely still have those nylon parachutes. It’s not nearly as fun as an adult, though, cause it doesn’t quite feel as big and roomy inside as it does when you’re a little one yourself.

One game we used to play was cat and mouse where one kid is the mouse and crawls around under the parachute while the kid who’s the cat is blindfolded on top and has to feel around for the lump underneath. It’s hilarious and results in the other kiddos jumping up and down squealing in delight while they watch their mouse classmate nearly get trampled by a blind cat. It’s making me laugh just thinking about it!

i loved the chute as well. we used to have aerobics in HS gym. i went to an all girls school. Each class a student would lead the work out on a stage. One time Jeanne was leading squats and farted in front of everyone. i remember that when i am embarrassed by something and immediately i feel better about my situation. remember you could have been jeanne.

I had never heard of Parachute Day (or anything to do with parachutes in gym class) until this post of yours. Despite the potential for nausea :) I’m thinking I missed out on something really fun. (I grew up in southwestern Pennsyltucky, BTW.)

OOOOHHHHH! I had forgotten Parachute Day until I read your post! Yes, it was so fun and different and just really cool. I wish MY work would do parachute day, too…

BTW, I grew up in N. CA, so back in the 80s the phenomenon had spread there. :)

Ah, this was so touching! I mean, there was vomit and parachutes, but the message overall was lovely. Loving this project.

And parachute day – how I loved thee! In Wyoming, we had designated parachute days in gym class (like you mentioned) but when we moved to Washington state, it was mainly reserved for days when it was just raining too damn hard for us to go on the playground. I think we used to pray for rain so we could spend our lunch recess playing with the parachute….didn’t always happen, of course. Sometimes we just sat in our classroom playing ‘Heads Up, Seven Up’.

Oh man! I wonder what is worse…vomit on your classmates or blood. I got a head injury when I was 10 or so during an indoor recess and it wasn’t pretty. Hmm. As for parachute play, they do it in Gymboree class. Got any Gymboree Play and Music places near you? I highly recommend the classes. Your little man is just about ready. I started mine when they were crawling pretty well. The parachute is the best part. LOL

I just recently started reading your blog. I love this post for a few reasons- 1) I LOVED parachute day. 2) The visual of vomit chunks on the other kids in your class had me laughing out loud. 3) It was endearing hearing your tell your son that he will survive chunks of vomit on parachute day. That’s so true! I, on the other hand, survived “exploding pen in the mouth day” ugh!
