I have been reading your site for a while now and I would just like to say thank you for writing these posts. I have not had children yet but your honesty is putting me at ease about the whole experience. It feels nice to get the raw truth about what a woman giving birth goes through.

PS. Emory is the cutest, I really see a lot of your face in his.

I know I should wait until you finish the story to comments but I can’t wait any longer. Woman – what you are writing about pretty confirms the fact that I NEVER EVER EVER want to go through childbirth. EVER.

Did I mention NEVER?

Hats off to you for going through what was obviously the ordeal of a lifetime, if not 100 lifetimes.

In the fantasy world where I make assumptions about what I would do in the future about things I might not do at all…...I don’t think I would have an epidural. There are a lot of reasons but to be honest the biggest is I am totally chicken! I am Sooooooo scared of doctors, needles the most! Yikes. I don’t know how you did it, girl. That shit FREAKS me out. I really don’t think I could have sat there and taken that.I mean wow! really. Just sayin. I congratulate you on being able to sit there and not run away like a chicken. That’s before you get to the part where you have the baby.

It is interesting how your labor experience is almost opposite of mine. Up until this post, I though that labor was, more or less, the same for all women. My contractions hurt bad, they brought tears to my eyes. But I did not feel anything, when the epidural was administered. Maybe, I was lucky to get an experienced anesthesiologist.

I tried to go natural. The contractions really didn’t hurt that much until about 6 hours before I gave birth and when they started to hurt it got really intense very quickly. By then, I was concerned about being totally exhausted and not being able to hardly even breathe through the intense pain of the contractions. I made it to 5cm – only halfway. Pitocin is wicked stuff. I could barely form sentences from the pain and yet I managed to clearly state that I wanted an epidural. That uncomfortable feeling of that needle going in is indescribable. Unfortunately, the first one didn’t take for me. After waiting half an hour to find out it didn’t work, I had to have a second one. It finally made me numb. After that, pure exhaustion kicked in and I don’t remember much until 4 hours later when I started pushing.

Labor is ridiculous. It seems like it takes forever to just get a little bit opened up and then after the ball is rolling it goes by so fast.

Hi Michele, like a few of the others above I am new here too and am so happy you decided to post the birth story. I’m due in April and am terrified of the whole thing. Hearing your story has been fascinating! I can’t wait to read the rest. Thanks for sharing it with a bunch of strangers!

have you seen the movie ‘Knocked Up’? That Asian doctor is a kook. And Seth Rogen’s chat with him in the hospital hallway reminds me something Toby might do.
I’m all for the epidural, although you’d think modern medicine could come up with a less medieval way to administer such a thing.

I did it naturally – and I won’t ever make that mistake again! Give me the pain meds because it hurt like heck. Like just-kill-me-already hurt. As always, eagerly awaiting the next chapter…

Michele,

One side numb other not happened to me too. I loved those anesthesiologists at Cornell. I asked if any were single. I wanted to set them up with any single ladies or guys I knew. The membrane scraping Greening did a couple of times in the weeks leading up to delivery. Try going back to work after that. Gross. I wish I had fentanyl or what ever it was you had. It sounds yummy. For me it wasnt the contractions either. I distinctly remember asking for a tylenol and a heating pad. It was the stages and that kid moving down that sent me through the roof. I had done so well closing my mind off to the pain but the hiding space that was left got smaller and smaller until I could no longer distance myself from the pain. That is when I had the wonderful anesthesiologists of Cornell Presbyterian Hospital. God bless the epidural. The pressure though is weird but I guess you have to know when to push.

Keep going! I am going to pop some popcorn for the next installment.
