The Rabbit Died

January 21st, 2007

the rabbit died

The phrase, “The rabbit died,” came to be a euphemism for a positive pregnancy test in the early twentieth century. It was discovered that if the urine of a pregnant woman was injected into a rabbit, there would be corpora hemorrhagica in its ovaries. Because the ovaries could not be inspected without dissecting the rabbit, the rabbit invariably died.

Rabbits of the world celebrate the modern pregnancy test for its accuracy and lack of collateral damage. Being quite fond of rabbits, our pregnancy was confirmed using one of these modern marvels.

We’re having a baby. Our due date is the fourth of August, two-thousand seven.

    Thanks, everyone!

Missy told me last night over dinner that the announcement was so matter-of-fact and neutral, which made us laugh quite hard when we realized how it might read. We never took the time to think about that. Heh. Anyway, we’re very excited and we didn’t kill any rabbits. And I’m sure I’ll be the most annoying blogger on Earth over the next 6 months. ;]

  17. Branden Hall said at 7:05 pm on January 21st, 2007:

Congrats! Toby – get good at food rubs, when my wife was pregnant they were requested quite often! Having a kidlet will definitely change your life – just not in ways you could ever predict – good luck and if you have any first-time dad questions just drop me a line (us first time dads have to stick together!)

  18. mihow said at 7:05 pm on January 21st, 2007:

Brandon, I love that you just wrote “food rubs” instead of foot rubs. That about sums up the past 3 months. ;]

  19. tobyjoe said at 7:05 pm on January 21st, 2007:

Branden – If you ever want to work with me again, you will kindly refrain from giving michele any ideas.

You mean that Patti gave YOU foot rubs, right?

    ;)

  20. haly said at 7:05 pm on January 21st, 2007:

CONGRATS YOU TWO!! will you find out about the baby’s gender or keep it a surprise?

  21. mihow said at 7:05 pm on January 21st, 2007:

Haly, when I got myself into this about three months ago, I was like “Ain’t no way I’m going to find out the gender! I want to be surprised!” But then we started (prematurely, probably, but it’s really fun!) to talk about names and that’s bloody hard enough with one sex let alone trying to come up with ideas for two. So, I’m going to find out. I also need to know what freaking pronoun to start using.

I am, however, absolutely SURE this is a boy. But I don’t know why. Perhaps it’s all the Mrs. T’s I’ve been craving. I hear that’s boy fetus food.

Tobyjoe, there will be food rubs, foot rubs, and back rubs. Oh yes, there will.

  27. mihow said at 7:05 pm on January 21st, 2007:

I’m an emotional wreck. Have been. Will continue to be. Even your congrats are making me weepy. Thank you, everyone. I’m a little terrified at this juncture in my life, but joyous as well.

This is probably going to be the only good thing I accomplish in life. But I’m still scared shitless. Not a day goes by where I don’t have one of those, “are you kidding me? me? inside me? right now?” moments. It’s almost too much to think about. So I try not to.

The really truly insane moment came last Thursday at our doctor’s appointment when the little dude began jumping around inside my body like some spastic lemur. I kept having to remember and then quickly forget that it was taking place inside of me. This is freaky. How do women do this shit? “

It has two arms, two legs, a bunch of organs, and a really fast heart but no real brain matter yet. We are hoping that changes. Brains are good.

  28. jenblossom said at 7:05 pm on January 21st, 2007:

As with any big life-altering thing, just don’t forget to breathe! I’m sure you guys are gonna do just fine. But yeah, I can imagine it must be an incredibly odd thing for you physically and mentally. And the hormonal stuff… yeah, I totally can’t begin to imagine.

You are the third person I know in as many weeks to announce their first pregnancy. It gives me great hope for the future that so many awesome people are procreating. ;)

  29. mihow said at 7:05 pm on January 21st, 2007:

    You’re making me cry again.

This is absurd. Seriously, who took me away and when am I coming back? Who is this person?

This is the first pregnancy and last. Tobyjoe is having his boys snipped after this. (So he says. heh) Some women have written me saying they loved being pregnant. My question is this: Did they say that when they were actually pregnant? Or is this some retroactive thing that you throw in later. Cuz, I love you all, all your emails, but I can’t say I believe you. ;]

  30. Missy said at 7:05 pm on January 21st, 2007:

I am going to laugh if “the little dude” turns out not to be a dude at all. In any case, I already have presents!

Just wait until you feel those little feet kicking you at night..there’s no way to describe how wonderful and amazing that feels. THAT is the only thing I miss about being pregnant.

I have to agree with Wendy. I enjoyed moments of my two pregnancies but there are parts I would love to forget. However the best thing ever is feeling the baby move and kick. I really miss that.
I also liked following the growth timeline for the baby as the weeks passed.
I can’t wait to hear about things progress! :o)

congratulations! it’s a crazy ride, and it will seem like a nutty whirlwhind and total loss of control until (s)he has been outside of the womb about 8 months—or maybe that’s just control freak me suddenly finding it much easier now. if you need any product reviews, you know you can count on my insane over-researching and simlicity-focused consumerism. so let me know if i can be of any help.

are you going to be a flickr whore? do it, do it!

i hope you’re feeling well and continue to have an enjoyable pregnancy! it goes slow until like 6 months, then it goes really fast… until the last few weeks. which will suck major balls. but then you get a little cute person. your baby is going to look like a sweet little imp, i can tell already.

  51. mihow said at 7:05 pm on January 21st, 2007:

Snow! Yes, I will take you up on that offer indeed. First, cribs. Then, car seats, hell, I need it all. :]

Hang in there. I started feeling better about week 14. Although, you never quite get rid of that feeling that your body is a science experiment.
