SELF-PORTRAIT DAY
posted by mihow on February 24th, 2005
Well, Self-Portrait Day was pushed live last night. The “Submit” section and the “Archive” section are still under construction. We hope to have them up and running entirely by next week. Also, please please please, email (or comment) here about any errors. There was only so much we could catch while designing and building the site locally. Plus, we’re both on Macs, so who knows if it works in every browser right now. And we do make errors. For example, I had entered the wrong information last night for some of this week’s faces. I am a bad person, but it was caught and all is well in the world again. :] (Sorry, Sarah! Sorry, Sherri! Sorry, Ashley!)
I have to go to the Vagina Doctor today for a check up. I hate visiting the Vagina Doctor.

oops. I commented on your other post about self-portrait day.
Well, here’s hoping that they warm up the speculum beforehand. And that it isn’t too painful/uncomfortable.
(I hate it too)

Excellent, excellent job. Thanks to you both for all of your hard work. The Internet appreciates it.
I hope your doc visit goes as well as one of those kind of doc visits can go. Brrrrrr…
February 24th, 2005 at 04:29 AM
I know, right? Rest assured, after my visit to the Vagina Doctor, I’ll have one original self-portrait to put up next week^

The “I know, right” was in reference to the coldness not the excellent job. There are many things that still need work. Many. But thanks for the kind words.

“Under construction” isn’t exactly true. Everything is working. Things just need some copy and design treatment.
February 24th, 2005 at 04:45 AM
Uhuh. Just like a programmer, blame the “under construction” on the graphic designer. You’re luck you’re in Mid-Town, my love.

Ack! The Vagina Doctor! I hate it, hate it, hate it..hope all goes well.
No worries on the short-lived misinformation under my picture…all is well now. The site is awesome…a great idea and well-executed. You guys rock.

mihow- You ought to know by this point that you have a standing invitation to my Oscar Bash. We always have it, and you’re ALWAYS welcome. I believe Aaron and maybe Greg are coming from Pitts. If you’re actually considering coming, email me.
(Sorry to everyone else…this is a reply to a comment from Tuesday).

SPD: It’s bee-U-tee-full!
good luck with your woofie…
February 24th, 2005 at 06:24 AM
Site looks great thanks for including me! No comment on the other thing…good luck with that though.

The gif links should be working again soon. We turned off hotlinking and then realized that it would screw everyone up. When Toby returns to his computer (he’s in a meeting) it will be fixed. I am so sorry about that. I don’t have any idea how to fix it myself. I’m a lowly designer. :/
February 24th, 2005 at 07:36 AM
Sweet. Site.
February 24th, 2005 at 07:40 AM
forgot to say, nice use of sarcasmark
February 24th, 2005 at 08:04 AM
...and note how clear it is (due to the absence of a second sarcasmark), that DonaldEugene really meant what he said!
quite effective, really.
February 24th, 2005 at 08:05 AM
I’m available if you need that checked as well.

That’s ok, ASSMAN. I think I’ll stick to the front-end and let Toby take care of the back-end.
February 24th, 2005 at 08:44 AM
ba da bum
Pretty hot site there Michele. I like it.. a lot!
February 24th, 2005 at 08:52 AM
I just had a weird realization: If the site is about “self” portraits… why then is there a lady taking a picture of someone/thing else besides herself as the icon for the site it? A very minor point, I know.
February 24th, 2005 at 08:57 AM
Yes, well, details are hard to flush out when you design a site in under a week. :/ Not that minor, but whatrya gonna do?

Arjen – Hold a camera and look in the mirror. See?
February 24th, 2005 at 10:03 AM
That’s what I got, anyway… The gal seems to be taking a self portrait because she isn’t using the viewfinder. Right?
February 24th, 2005 at 10:06 AM
I just love that she’s pinching her lip, she has great taste in cameras, and she’s friggin’ hot. I’d do her. In front of that camera, mirror and all. Awwww yeah.

New Vagina Doctor information (fresh from my Evidence Based Medicine class):
They now recommend that if you have had 3 normal paps in a row, and you are otherwise low risk, you only have to get a pap smear every 3 years.
I just had my first no-vagina-check Vagina Doctor visit last month—WOO HOO!
February 24th, 2005 at 11:36 AM
Thanks, mihow and Toby Joe for the fantastic SPD site!
My Vagina Doctor uses the plastic specula (is that the proper plural of speculum?) and they are SO much better than the scary metal variety. And they never get cold!

i wanted to leave a short note here about what a nice job you and toby did on selfportraitday. i jumped right down to the comment box and then i read the three previous comments above this. i got a little distracted. did i tell you about the incredible tomatos we scored?
February 24th, 2005 at 12:28 PM
awww, thanks kitten. You know something, Photo-boy? The contrast on your clickety click site over there needs to see more exposure time. I CAN BARELY READ IT! But I did anyway. I leaned in really close to the monitor and read what I could. It helps to squint a little bit. :]
February 24th, 2005 at 12:54 PM
i’ll fix that for you, missy. i built it that way in one of my drunken attempts to alienate and infuriate my two readers. now that you are paying attention, though, i’ll make it legible.
February 24th, 2005 at 02:28 PM
awesome job, guys. the site is great, i love the lady and the stuff she says – thanks for including me!
btw – the viewfinder on a rolli is seen by looking down. but still – she’s probably looking into a mirror.
February 24th, 2005 at 03:01 PM
The site looks great Michele. It works in Mozilla running on Linux (in case you were wondering).
February 24th, 2005 at 03:06 PM
shar, you were way helpful, by the way. Thank you so much. We’ll need your gal geekiness in the future (now?) if you’re down for that sort of thing. Currently, I am trying to optimize the graphics as they are HUGE. That was one thing we let go last night. :] Hopefully, the download time will be lesser once I am finished with some crafty optimization work.
February 24th, 2005 at 03:19 PM
SPD looks great in IE6 and Firefox on XP. Awesome job.
February 24th, 2005 at 04:01 PM
SPD looks beautiful! You guys did such and amazing job.
I’m sorry you have to go to the Vagina Doctor. That sucks more than almost anything else. :( Your hoo hoo is in my thoughts. Wait…that didn’t sound right…
February 24th, 2005 at 06:29 PM
SPD looks wonderful, and I had a great time participating. I’ll try to be sure to give it a shout out every Thursday to keep the folks coming back for more. Great job!
February 24th, 2005 at 06:32 PM
You should participate again, Mary. Like I said, it’s totally free to use as anyone wishes. That’s why we built it. :] And thank you for the help.
February 25th, 2005 at 04:21 AM
He y’all didn’t mean to be a negative nancy there. But on the upside: if that is the only critique I could come up with, that is evidence on what an excellent job you guys did. And the fact that TJ can build that whole backend from scratch is just wayyy beyond me. I can’t even get movabletype to do what I want. sigh.
February 25th, 2005 at 04:27 AM
We didn’t take it as negative, my dear boy. No way, jose. I can take critique like you wouldn’t believe. I was trained well at Penn State. Lanny used to tear up projects and throw them out the window. You can always say what you mean in reference to Graphic Design. How the hell else might I learn anything if it’s not from peers?
February 25th, 2005 at 05:53 AM
Thanks Michele. I’d be glad to help out once the “newborn schedule” gets smoothed out and I can be on my computer more than once a day. Optimization bah—when I switched my OS to Linux I lost my optimization tools. Now optimizing is a headache and a time consumer so I can relate.
